My Glasgow Kitchen

My Little Corner of the World

To me, Luffa = bath sponge. My grandmother used to plant it and oddly we do not consume it but leave it to mature. The flesh and skin disintegrates and all that is left is the fibers and seeds within the fibers. We just shake it or pry it to remove the seeds. She uses it as a kitchen sponge and it is my bath sponge.

Asian Vegetables (Gourd): Luffa/ 丝瓜 (sīguā)/ Petola

Ridged gourd/ angled gourd are the type of luffa more commonly seen here in the supermarket. After removing the skin of the luffa, it was quite soft when pressing on it.

It can be stir fried or boiled in soup form. I stir fried mine plain with garlic but you can also stir fry it with other vegetables, egg or meat.
