My Little Corner of the World

A month ago, I found many types of sweet potato on sale in a supermarket. I wasn’t sure which to buy. A few days ago, I decided to buy them all for a taste test. (Above pic from left: Indonesian sweet potato, Taiwan sweet potato, Purple sweet potato, Red sweet potato, Yellow sweet potato, White sweet potato)

I used a peeler to remove the skin.

So how should I cook it?

I have tried various method before: baked sweet potato, steamed sweet potato, sweet potato wedges, sweet potato mash with carrots…

I prefer to eat sweet potato in chinese sweet dessert form although steamed or baked version will be better for a taste test.

I then boiled it with sugar and pandan leaf (screwpine leaf)

Preference

From 12 o’clock going clockwise direction: White sweet potato, Yellow sweet potato, Red sweet potato, Purple sweet potato, Taiwan Sweet potato and Indonesian sweet potato.

Overall I preferred the red sweet potato, purple sweet potato and Taiwan Sweet Potato. I liked the white sweet potato least. Its just a personal taste as the yellowish and whitish ones tasted starchy.

What about the price per kg?

After taking the price and taste test into consideration, will be buying red sweet potato in the future…

  • White sweet potato    RM 3.50
  • Yellow sweet potato  RM 3
  • Red sweet potato       RM 3.50
  • Purple sweet potato   RM 4
  • Taiwan Sweet potato RM 5
  • Indonesian sweet potato. RM 5
  • I had excluded Japanese sweet potato from this taste test. Price RM7.
